Ever noticed unsightly gaps forming between hardwood planks? Or perhaps seen mysterious bubbles appearing under a vinyl floor? Maybe you’ve personally dealt with the frustration of laminate planks separating at the seams despite what you assumed was careful installation? These types of flooring problems can be both costly and disruptive to deal with, but the good news is that most are preventable with the right knowledge and approach.
The most important factors in achieving long-lived, beautiful flooring are proper acclimation and installation, followed by consistent care and maintenance. Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions and you'll be setting yourself up for success.
In today's guide, we’ll explore the most common problems that affect hardwood, laminate, and vinyl flooring. We’ll explain why these issues occur, how you can address them, and most importantly, how to prevent them from happening in the first place.
Gaps Between Planks
Visible spaces developing between flooring planks, particularly at the joints, are a common concern. However, while often misinterpreted as defects, gapping is almost always a symptom of environmental or subfloor issues, not a flaw in the flooring itself.
Cause: Gaps primarily result from fluctuations in humidity. Flooring materials can expand and contracts as relative humidity changes. When humidity drops (common during winter when heating systems are running), planks shrink and pull apart. Insufficient expansion joints around room perimeters can force planks together, exacerbating the problem when they contract.
Correction: Minor gaps may resolve as humidity levels stabilize. More persistent gaps might require replacing individual planks or reinstalling the flooring to allow for proper expansion spacing.
Prevention: Proper acclimation is crucial, especially for hardwood flooring. Allow the flooring to sit in its final location, unwrapped (and for the length of time specified by the manufacturer) to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity. Maintain consistent indoor humidity levels (ideally between 30-50% year-round) using humidifiers or dehumidifiers as needed. Remember, if you're going to be running the heat, you need to run a humidifier too!
Cupping and Crowning
Cupping occurs when plank edges rise higher than the center, creating a concave surface. Crowning is the opposite -- when the center of planks rises higher than the edges, forming a convex surface.
Cause: Both issues stem from moisture imbalances, primarily stemming from environmental or subfloor conditions. Cupping typically results from moisture penetrating flooring material from below, while crowning often occurs when surface moisture exceeds the moisture content within the flooring.
Prevention: Installation over a properly prepared subfloor is key. Install proper moisture barriers, especially over concrete subfloors. Ensure adequate ventilation in areas prone to moisture, and address any plumbing issues promptly. Maintain consistent humidity levels throughout your home.
Warping and Buckling
Severe deformation where planks lift significantly from the subfloor, creating an uneven, unsafe walking surface. This is also (incorrectly) viewed as a defect on occasion.
Cause: Major moisture exposure, such as flooding, significant leaks, or extreme humidity changes. Poor installation techniques or inadequate expansion gaps can also contribute to buckling.
Correction: Unfortunately, warped or buckled planks typically require complete replacement. The affected area must be removed, the subfloor assessed and dried thoroughly, and new planks installed with proper moisture protection.
Prevention: Follow manufacturer guidelines for expansion gaps and be sure to install appropriate moisture barriers. Address water damage immediately – the first 24-48 hours are critical for preventing permanent damage.
Scratches and Dents
Surface damage ranging from fine hairline scratches to deeper gouges and impact marks.
Cause: Daily wear from foot traffic, pet claws, furniture movement, and dropped objects. High-traffic areas are particularly susceptible.
Correction: Minor scratches can sometimes be minimized with flooring repair kits. Deeper damage usually requires plank replacement.
Prevention: Use furniture pads on all chair and table legs. Establish entryway mats to reduce tracked-in debris. Keep pet nails trimmed and consider area rugs in high-traffic zones. Bubbles and Lifting Edges
Areas where flooring planks separate from the subfloor, creating raised bubbles or lifted edges.
How It Happens: Poor adhesion, moisture infiltration, or installation over inappropriate surfaces. For floating floors, inadequate acclimation or damaged locking systems can cause similar issues.
Correction: Small bubbles can sometimes be addressed by carefully pricking with a needle and pressing out trapped air, though this risks permanent flooring damage. Larger areas typically require partial or complete reinstallation.
Prevention: Ensure subfloors are clean, dry, and properly prepared prior to installation. Use appropriate adhesives and follow manufacturer installation guidelines. Allow floating floors to acclimate properly before installation.
…And Let's Not Forget Water Damage
The term "water damage" is often used incorrectly. Immediately, most people think of surface water, which is generally caused by drips, spills and small leaks, but the more pressing issue is actually subfloor moisture. If the area underneath your flooring gets damp, it can cause much of buckling and expansion we discussed earlier in the post, and destroy your flooring over time. Subfloor moisture issues must be addressed before you install your flooring, so be sure to test your levels and install a moisture barrier if needed!
