Gaps Between Planks
Visible spaces developing between flooring planks, particularly at the joints, are a common concern. However, while often misinterpreted as defects, gapping is almost always a symptom of environmental or subfloor issues, not a flaw in the flooring itself.
Cause: Gaps primarily result from fluctuations in humidity. Flooring materials can expand and contracts as relative humidity changes. When humidity drops (common during winter when heating systems are running), planks shrink and pull apart. Insufficient expansion joints around room perimeters can force planks together, exacerbating the problem when they contract.
Correction: Minor gaps may resolve as humidity levels stabilize. More persistent gaps might require replacing individual planks or reinstalling the flooring to allow for proper expansion spacing.
Prevention: Proper acclimation is crucial, especially for hardwood flooring. Prevention: Installation over a properly prepared subfloor is key. Install proper moisture barriers, especially over concrete subfloors. Ensure adequate ventilation in areas prone to moisture, and address any plumbing issues promptly. Maintain consistent humidity levels throughout your home.
Warping and Buckling
Severe deformation where planks lift significantly from the subfloor, creating an uneven, unsafe walking surface. This is also (incorrectly) viewed as a defect on occasion.
Cause: Major moisture exposure, such as flooding, significant leaks, or extreme humidity changes. Poor installation techniques or inadequate expansion gaps can also contribute to buckling.
Correction: Unfortunately, warped or buckled planks typically require complete replacement. The affected area must be removed, the subfloor assessed and dried thoroughly, and new planks installed with proper moisture protection.
Prevention: Follow manufacturer guidelines for expansion gaps and be sure to install appropriate moisture barriers. Address water damage immediately – the first 24-48 hours are critical for preventing permanent damage.
Scratches and Dents
Surface damage ranging from fine hairline scratches to deeper gouges and impact marks.
Cause: Daily wear from foot traffic, pet claws, furniture movement, and dropped objects. High-traffic areas are particularly susceptible.
Correction: Minor scratches can sometimes be minimized with flooring repair kits. Deeper damage usually requires plank replacement.
